FAO people with a Sierra 2.9 with aircon
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:20:04 AM »
Is there anyone that has a 2.9 Sierra with aircon fitted? I'm in the process of fitting aircon to my V6, but I don't have the correct condenser for it. Unfortunately the condenser for the 2.9 is no longer available. Therefore I'm having a 1.8/2.0 condensor modified to fit the 2.9. The only thing that is different is the tube from the condenser going to the aircon compressor. But the problem is that they don't know exactly how this pipe should run. Is there anyone who has a 2.9 condenser lying around or fitted to their car who wants to take some pictures and measurements?

Not availible?

first hit on google:

http://www.automotive-air-conditioning-vehicle-parts.com/air-conditioning-condensers-results.aspx?models-for=FORD&Model=SIERRA&part=Condensers

http://www.aaronradiator.co.uk/catalog/Ford_Sierra_Mk2_Condenser-846-1.html

The red pipe is metal and bolts into the drier about half way up.
The green pipe is metal and heads backwards and connects to the joint on the rubbr/metal pipe that attaches to the ( dual connection ) back of the compressor.

It is granada / scorpio, but it gives you a idea how to connect it.

Well, I also thought it was still available, so I ordered this one http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/Ford_Sierra_Condensers.aspx.

The picture next to it is correct also, but then I received a condenser for an Opel Corsa.  So I called the company and said I received the wrong one. But according to them it is not the wrong one, the one I received is also listed for a Sierra 2.9, but with engine code TV29 instead of B4B or B4C. The fact the TV29 is not even a Ford engine code or that there is only one type of 2.9 for the Sierra didn't bother them. And when I said the one I received didn't even look like the picture they said the picture is only for illustration purposes, so the actual condenser might look different. Basically they said I ordered the wrong one when selecting the Sierra 2.9 one, although the pictures are the correct ones. They offered me to refund it, but I had to ship it back to the UK on my own costs, which means I have to pay twice for shipping (2x 25 pounds) and then still have nothing.

But anyway, I checked with a few aircon compagnies and the 2.9 version is no longer available.  :(

Sell the opel corsa one. Edit, you already have it for sale.

Maybe for sierra, they are hard to find because not many sierras had aircon. Most 2.9 scorpios have aircon, so finding a condensor should not be to hard and they are still availible new. The condensor is a bid different, but can be easely adapt to a sierra, but you also need the scorpio hoses.

First hit with google: http://www.winparts.nl/15/koelsysteem/airco-condensor?automerk=FORD&automodel=SCORPIO+I+(GAE%2C+GGE)++%7C++1985.04-1994.09

You could give this company a call or mail:

That was my first plan. So I had the aircon company order a Scorpio 2.9 one, but the only one they could still get was for a Scorpio 4x4. Not really a problem, but then they couldn't get the matching dryer for it anymore.  :( In the end I asked if they could get a Sierra condenser with matching dryer, this turned out to be a 1.8/2.0 pinto condenser. The only thing that needs changing is the pipe going to the compressor, so now I need to find out how it is supposed to run, as they haven't got detailed drawings of that.

They run the same as in the pictures above, The top pipe goes to the pump, the bottom one to the dryer. A good airco company should be able to make a new hose or pipe that fits.

I know how they are supposed to run, but I need to have the angle and distance where the pipe on the condenser changes direction. I think it goes down at approximately 45 degrees after passing the radiator on the side. But I need to be sure as I don't want to have the condenser modified in a way that the compressor hose doesn't fit.

I cant help you with that. When i did the aircon in the mustang, used some 10 mm water hose and 10 mm old copper pipe to make a mock up for the new hoses and pipe. This way i know how long the hoses and pipe should be, where the bends where and how everything is routed in the engine bay. The new hoses where a copy from the old hoses and pipe. Most aircon companys can make that for you, if you have a mock up.
