non startin xr4i
« on: March 27, 2016, 18:09:49 PM »
hi guys,

i've tried to start my 4i after a few years doing nothing, and the following happened.

i drove the car for a few hundered meters, made a 180 turn, drove back to the shed, got in reverse to the door, the engine died and did'nt want to run since.

i've got about 20 liters of gas out of the tank, and threw in a few literes of fres fuel.
somewhere in the process of renewing many parts i had to pull out the complete ignition, and i placed it back on the proper way, the rotor arm is in the middle of the stripy mark on the outer ring, while the crank is on the second pin of the ignition timer on the crank pulley.

i'm replacing the leads and see if the ignition is still okay tomorrow, maybe it helps.

next, my purple relay is a bit dodgy, if i'm trying to start it flickers on and off, so i directly connected the fuel pump leads with a wire with to spoons, so the pump runs contiueasly, but also, no start. it tries a bit, becouse you can hear a near ignition in the exhaust, but not enough to actually start the engine.

i've do got sparks, so the coil wont be the problem i believe.

could it be a dodgy fuel pump relay? does that one also switch on the ignition thingie located on the fender?

I would start with replacing the purple relay. Because of the purple relay I assume we are talking about K injection.

You mean the safety switch? That's either on or off.

It could be that the cold start injector isn't working.

You could try to spray some fuel into the intake and see if its wants to starts.

it is indeed kjet, i replaced the purple relais, didn't do the trick, i'll get my proper tool box tomorrow to it and set the crank right and see how the ignition is, i'll replace it with another one, the cold start injector works with the green cold start relais if i'm right? last time i checked the plugs where a bit wet, so there goes petrol there, you also hear it pushing its to much fuel back after a few start tries

nope, i replaced the purple relay, and replaced the ignition turret and leads, i got some backpressure from the inlet (fuel witch comes back?) so i definitly got fuel in the cilinders, and even with a few dirty injectors the thing should still run, badly, but it should run. so i think it's a ignition problem, i'll see what it does with the ignition 180 deg other way around

after the replaced ignition was placed i rotated it 180 degrees, and it started. found out the previous ignition was dodgy and wobbly
so... it started and it runs pretty decent, so time for the next step

well it still goes like hell for an atmo 2.8, wont idle 100% so i still have to replace the injectors but dammit it is fast and it is hard work to drive it, all the headworks done by my brother in law do pay off, and while it wont have the 188 (undrivable bhp's becouse it was very unsmooth like any engine with high rev bhp's and low rev issues, witch is the biggest disadvantage in MFI) it had in the track car, it should still see about 175 bhp, and it made my smile from ear to ear as well as my doughter witch i promisid a ride in it's maiden voyage after 9 years...

so do i, i've even replaced the iterior, so much more space on the attic, and i fitted a dashboard, only the driversside rear lamp unit is knackered and the front headlamp driversside wont work properly but if i fiddle with the plug it works, so needs a bit of cleaning, a few new fuses, and a few new gaiters and such, lucky i replaced the bushes with PU 9 years ago, so they are in great state, and even the brakes or clutch are'nt siezed!
