They are stress plates used when boring and honing the cylinders. Nice build!

torque plate for boring and honing the cilinders, looks like he used sleeves in the bores, a one piece girdle, custom cam and beter valve springs, arp studs, removed the chain guides and used a gear wheel for tension the chain, modifyed sump for more oil and oil control, modifyed heads whit bigger valves, at least, the intakes, roller rockers, fabricated bigger valve covers, beter intake. and maybe there is more what i cant see.

T5 gearbox with some modifications, and they use a explore fly wheel with a uprated v8 clutch,  8.8 rear diff.

A lot of work went into that car.

It makes much HP with a reliable engine but much is also modified and/or changed.

4.0l crank and sbc pistons? Maybe from a 305, Mahles or KB's?

I have followed that engine for years.

The first build ripped out the two middle caps.

You can see he did his on brace for the rebuild.

The engineering & work put into the engine is fantastic however it does not make good figures for what it is.

There is a restriction holding it back.

It's a 4330 cc engine running 21 psi yet it only pulls 460 lbs of torque!

Hi all. It's my car.
Block was machined sleeves which can be used in 4.060" the pistons and 6 'rods. + 5.00 mm crankshaft stroke.
I destroyed two pistons in it. The first was the KB silvolite, second ROSS. Knocking is bad .. The ecu was Megasquirt.
I changed it to KMS, and Mahle pistons.
Low torque perhaps partly too early in the cam-shaft.
It 17psi shoot out later. 450hv675/nm, but the cracks in the block above the main line. R.I.P
I building new now.

Thanks, knocking was the result of mega's code update errors. Mega tune seemed to play ok, but correct info didn't pass to the ecu.
Two rides on the road and that's it. Knock, knock and blue smoke..again.
This Aerostar 4.0 engine was my dream assembly to Sierra and with two turbos. I like to build and apply my ideas.

Hi Pete & welcome.

I have followed your car for a few years now, very impressive work.

It's my understanding that your first engine build ended up like this.

Then you rebuilt it again & improved it.

Are you saying it's happened again!  :o

Very nice Dave. You find pics that I didn't manage to find. That picture of sleeves block and was the "final edition" block. 2.0 bar booster and second turbo only 0,8 bar. I noticed that too late. Lots of money burned is in a few second.
After that I combined intercoolers.

So that was the second build  :o

What happened to the first one then?

The amount of good work you put into this & money this really shouldn't be happening to you Pete.

Very unlucky!

First engine oil leaked and camshaft bearing rolled to its housing. Second, water run to 5th cylinder. Casting on this block was weak. :(
Machined sleeves etc. and the picture above shows how it ended.

Sorry to hear that Pete.
Skogenracing Crilles Taunus (Cortina) 4.0 turbo also gave up. The cam chain tensioner broke and bearings got really bad. Not sure if it was due to the oil leak through the broken tensioner or if it was just to much pressure for the bearings. It is the same problems on 29ers but with much lesser frequency of breakdowns.

The sound in the 4.0 is really heavy! Sounds really nice.

I am very sad Cortina oilpressure problems.
Sierra was Explorer modified oil pan.But this not play good.
Initially, a quarter mile acceleration, the oil light will flash.(I see ) Not a good thing. I built baffles and added volume. Now is no longer accelerating oil light flashed. But new problem. Baffles work on the track badly. A sharp bend to the left and the oil light was blinking again. I realized this too late and the machine broke down, and turbos.
Someone else boasted that machine sounds. I also like.

Ever thought about using this:

Stock oil sumps have no baffles or oil control to keep the oil pickup covered and even with baffles, trapdoors, and screens, its not a guaranty that the oil pickup stays covered during acceleration, braking or cornering. This is where the accusump comes in. It pushes oil in to the system if the oil pressure drops.
