Do you know any nice places?
« on: November 07, 2007, 01:15:52 AM »
Well as this site has become international in it's users I thought this may be a good place to start asking for ideas?

I have started planning the next trip me & few friends do each year.
Start date 4th July
Is there any good places or must sees on our route?

Transport of choice this year is London Taxi cabs

Have not thought of a catchy name yet for the trip but the route will be roughly:

Bergen-Norway
Travel northish through the Fjords to Trondheim.
Some of the best site seeing roads in the world according to Nat. Geographic

Ostersund-Sweden
Lulea

Rovaniemi-Finland
Be on the Artic Circle err whats it like in July???????
Vaasa
Helsinki
Ferry across

Tallinn-Estonia

Riga-Lativa

Kaunas-Lithuania

Warsaw-Poland

Down to Slovaki to see a friend

Prague-Czech Rep

Nurburg Ring-Germany
Taxi racing round the ring

Holland & home.

Any tips or must sees would be great

Cheers

Dave

Ostersund, that is almost in my neighbourhood  , what route do you have planned from Ostersund to Lulea? I'll see if I can think of anything worth looking at on your route...

Dave, when driving in Sweden and Finland, be aware of that we got big elks in the woods, keep that in mind when driving in early or late hours on certain roads... But the good thing is that July nights aren't dark, you will notice this as you get further north....

Tobbe
Ostersund to Lulea?
Well the main road at the moment.
To sundsvall then follow the coast up.
Works out to 8 hours 375miles, does that sound right?

We only work out a rough plan as it never works out, if a road looks good that's the one we take.

Is the coast road nice or is it worth cutting across & heading up the 45?

Big Elks, that will be dinner sorted then

How far north do you have to go for 24hours daylight then?

Mike
Isle Of Wright????
Think me Dads going fishing there actually

Hi Dave

The Bergen ‚€€œ Trondheim tour is on the other side of south Norway from where I live, but I still have a few thoughts for you.

This part of Norway is (almost) all about nature, nature and nature with the big fjords and mountains. Like Hardangerfjorden, Geirangerfjorden and Sognefjorden

Trollstigen (The Troll Path) is a must see (or a must drive) it‚‚žÂs one of the most visited attractions in Norway. A mountain road with 18 hairpin turns all the way up the mountain side with an amazing view. Some info here www.trollstigen.net/index2.php
From there you can visit Geirangerfjorden www.geiranger.no/english.html
‚€¦‚Å“Geiranger is the crowing glory among Norway's fjord district's pearls of natural beauty. Majestic, snow-covered mountain peaks, beautiful and wild waterfalls, lush, green vegetation and the deep blue waters of the fjord - yes, it really is like something taken from a fairy tale‚Ý

And as Tobbe says there are a lot of elks in Norway too.

But one important thing: bee ware of the speed limits ‚€€œ the fines you get for speeding in Norway are extremely high.
If you drive 81 km/t (50mph) where the speed limit is 60 km/t (37mph) the fine will bee 6500kr (£540)
If you drive 111km/t (68mph) where the speed limit is 80km/t (50mph) the fine will bee 7800kr (£650)

If you need more info try this site: www.visitnorway.com

Hey Kib Thanks.

The Troll Path will be on our route too now

We was already doing this which I thought your link was too but I don't think they are the same?

Speeding sounds nasty if we get caught

Cheers

Dave

Just picked my wheels up for this trip

It's a complete knacker of a Taxi, it's gonna need a fair bit of work but will be worth about 3 times what I paid for it when we return
Taxi's seem to worth a fair bit of cash these days
I can get a double bed in the back so should be nice & snug.

Not Ford powered so won't bore you with any more details

Well the water pump is leaking & it won't start with out easy start but apart from that it's not bad for a 400,000 mile engine.

It's mega rusty thou

Anyway it's no fun if it's to easy

Mornin Dave,

we live near Osnabr€™€Ã‚¼ck in Germany so you´ll probably be passing close by on your way up to Skandinavia.
If you fancy a break and a brew just give us a shout.

Not sure if this fits in, timimg wise, but on your way to the ring stop off at a small place called Lobbach near Heidelberg.

http://www.oldtimerfreunde-lobbachtal.de/]http://www.oldtimerfreunde-lobbachtal.de/

On the 26th/27th July there is a fantastic classic car meet, 80% Ford. The countryside is fantastic, Heidelberg is definately worth a visit and there are two massive Car-truck-plane- WWII Museums local.

http://www.technik-museum.de/]http://www.technik-museum.de/

We´ll be there if you fancy a decent cup of tea

I was gonna drop you a email actually Tobbe.

I am struggling with Sweden to find things to see or visit.

This can't be as I am sure there is loads.

At moment we going from Trondeim to Ostersund via the 14 stopping at the €™€Ã‚¦re ski resort for a walk round (July).

Ostersund to Umea via 45/92.

Then follow the 4 to Lulea & onwards to Finland (Rovaniemi) to see Santa, watch the sun set & rise within 30 mins + dry dog sleighing.

Can't wait

Paul no nothing as good as that but you can find lots of people who have done the routes that give details on the net that you can use to plan.

Oldbus we will be back home by the 26th July which is a shame but I will look at them places when I get to the detailed planning at that stage. Thanks.

To all, yeah I would love to meet up with as many people as possible but we have to stick to some sort of route & time is short so may not always be possible.

Nearer the time I will stick a detailed route up, hopefully I might be able to meet a few people

I'll have a look later on the different communities you will be passing and what they can offer for tourists, I'll post lots of links to their tourist information so you can find something interresting....... And I will also have a look on an alternative route if there is anything worth looking at elsewhere...

Hi All

Well I am already well into this trip.
Right now I am at a place called Apple Island which is near Moletai Lithuania.

Been an amazing trip so far, check out our tracking map:

http://trackme.at/maps/114]Tracking

Weather has been very kind, even on the Artic circle we were in T-shirts & it was like 21 c & sunny.

It was a nightmare the last week before we left, the yellow Taxi we was planning to do it in turned out to be a Lemon, the body was well rotten & the engine had a cracked head etc etc.

Got a MetroCab last thing that uses a 2.5D Transit engine & box. So I am officially FORD POWERED!

Got it through the M.O.T the day before we left & worked on it through the night before the trip to catch the ferry at Newcastle.
Infact still working on it as we travel, great fun & so far so good.

Heres the facts:

So far we have done 2600 miles.
Average 33mpg
Max top speed about 117kph then it shakes so much it's scary!
0-60 = a very long time.
Weight = about 2 ton.

Diesel well

About the same in Norway, Sweden & Finland as U.K.
Less than a quid in Estoia & Latvia.
1.20 in Lithuania.

Met Frode in Norway & Tobbe in Sweden.

If anyone is near us & wants to have a chat & a beer text me on +447710501093

Route left  is Poland - Slovak - Czech - Germany - Holland - Belguim - Calais

Check out the plan: http://davesprojects.tech.officelive.com/2008%20Planner.htm]http://davesprojects.tech.officelive.com/2008%20Planner.htm

We are about one day behind at the moment but probably will be 2 as we plan more time in Poland.

Cheers.

It is a hell of a trip.

Doing it in a taxi is such a laugh as everybody waves & wants their picture with the taxi.
Taxi is a bit of a crowd puller.

You can also get a double bed in the back, so comfy too.

Now in Poland.

The capital tomorrow.

Well I am back.

Took a complete knacker of a old 260K + miles London Taxi 4500 miles round Europe in 3 weeks.

& not one break down, speeding ticket or anything worse than 2 missing wheel trims & a loose bolt on the steering I had to tighten.
Was at least hoping to get stuck some where for a day or two  now I have got to go back to work on Monday.

Trip couldn't of gone better to be honest.

Norway was better than even the hype, amazing place err & price!
Sweden was a bit of a let down (sorry  )
Finland is what I thought, very nice.
Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania was a bit of a shock, not sure what to think before the trip but wow them places are changing fast, yes some areas are still run down but the main cities are well posh.
Oh & the women, if I was only single again I could have been very naughty
Poland is as described to me by Polish friends, again changing fast & abit like England a few years back I think.
Slovakia was where we stopped with friends & for 2 days didn't pay for nothing such is the good will of the locals. Oh & the mountains, a mini Norway!
Czech is bang up to date, with lots of tourists as there is lots to see.
Germany, Holland, Belgium & France just as I remember but with hot sunshine.
Wurzburg was real nice & never liked France.

Err that's it, just got the 9 hours of video to edit & god knows how many pictures.

Dave
