what do you do for a living ?
« on: May 13, 2013, 21:16:08 PM »
Thought i would do this just to see what most people do day to day for work so i will kick it off lol,
Im 30 and as i like to call myself..... a "building automation engineer" dealing with access control systems, all fire alarm systems including fire suppression, cctv and security alarms. I do love my job as i get to go into some proper tip top places the best property was a £30million house in wotton under edge in gloucester had a lovely rs500 in there and some very old porsches too, don't know if i should post a lil vid see in a bit. Ive also worked on pow's estate too in high grove, Tetbury. I've seen a rolls royce phantom 1 thats worth 3.5 million that is one of only 2 made but they don't know where the other one is ! it proper old it has ignition advance on the steering wheel as well as fuel enrichment too ! the owner does drive it and said it takes a lot of concentration its also about as long as a bus and weighs nearly 5 tonnes !

Heres a little vid of the 30 mill mansion

I did my mechanical engineering apprenticeship too and did some toolmaking but not to the scale of what your probably working on, i just made pretty straightforward follow on tools for 50-100 tonne presses on copper and brass only.
One of the site i work on they have a massive press it always amazes me how just flat steel goes in and a complete chassis piece comes out folded pierced to tiny tolerances,

31, running a speed shop!

A regular day I'm making harnesses for EMS, mapping cars and selling tuning parts.
A New Dyno will arrive within a month, will be very interesting to explore the facts instead of only theory and feeling.   ;)

40+,done numerous jobs in the past inlcuding working in our family run pub,lgv driver, flt driver, rtitb instructor, transport depot forman, engineer, warehouse worker, charity worker/driver , a few unmentionable jobs ...and now im a sfatey inspector for BT ,basicaly doing "mot" checks on everything the staff have from van stock through to gas detector claibration and repairs, pat testing, compressor and generator  or hydraullic equip servicing and repairs and then on to lifting "lloyds certified" equipment inspections on all the pole errection lorries. Cover all climbing equipment too.......sounds a lot but its nothing hard or exciting.if you see an engineer with something, I'll get to check and service/repair it.
would have prefferred to have done an apprenticship with someone like fred dibnah instead though.
i do have a nice sized workshop though so "projects "do hapen on a regular basis so it could be worse.....wages coulndt be though, earning less now than i was 15 years ago driving flts :(

I'm a Emergency Medical Technician for Northwest Ambulance Service in Oldham and currently based on a rapid response car. Get to legally drive quite quickly which can be interesting. Those new Volvo diesels are quite nippy  ;D

I'm also setting up a new classic car restoration company with my stepson. Just in our second year with minimal budget but plenty to be getting on with. Working 7 days a week though which is tough.

Cool, currently running from Midd, I park up on Wood st by the daycare centre.

To be honest, there's no real type of "average obstacle". The hot weather has been a pain, aircon and stereos blasting means some just don't know we're on their arse.

Thankfully crashes are rare but inevitable, although we have exemptions on certain traffic laws, if we have a bump, we're legally in the wrong. Hope he was alright.
