Hi all, just thought id post a few pics of my capri 24v, i started it a few weeks ago and im nearly done now, just waitin on the wiring, courtesy of MOB, and i gotta fabricate a bit on the exhaust. Its was originally a 2.8i special so it had a few goodies anyway now its just gonna be even quicker   piccys up at the moment are with the engine out, ill get some more showing the engine in tommorow when theres a bit more light. cheers

Alex

Time for another edit and more updated pics, car has been on the road for about a month now and has done over 3k miles, no engine problems so far, although i did snap a rear disc :S i had this silly idea the other day about a mk2 fiesta with a 1600 cvh turbo...then i drove my car...i cant explain how awesome these engines are its just stupidly fast and i love it haha.

Tony

hi alex,,, still looking good chap!
the loom will be with you soon ow and by the way, the engine loom, take the two cam cover bolts off at the front, take the engine loom off them,,, it needs to be on the other side!
i normaly use two of the water pump bolts so the plugs are at chassis level on pasenger side!

looking forward to the engine in pix

Aye tony i see whatcha mean about the wiring loom, i just bolted it in there because thats how i thought it was when i 1st got it haha, wont be hard to swap it over though. all i need to do now is:

Finish off the downpipe to exhaust sleeve
Get an air filter (not a priority just yet though)
Fit the wiring loom and do the rev counter etc
Im also thinking about a different radiator because ive had to lower the original 2.8 one quite a bit for bonnet clearence, if anyone has got any suggestions on a decent small radiator? (if such a thing exists)
and paint the battery box.

Will update next weekend hopefully because i wont be at home during the week (got me old man helping me out with the car though )

Almost done, sorry about lack of updates have been taking photos just havnt uploaded them, had a few mishaps today once the engine was in...a note to anyone who is trying this in a capri...the battery will have to be relocated, and the alternator is one hell of a tight fit if your using power steering. anyway after welding up some flexy pipe to the exhaust and getting rid of any gaps in the weld....not as easy as it sound...you fill a small pin prick then blow a massive hole 10 secs later...it resulted in more weld then exhaust but i think we got it in the end...or rather me old man got it seen as i lost my rag with it haha  hmm after that we gave the engine a quick check over tightened most of the hose fittings, removed the alternator, power steering pump and bracket so that it went in easy and we had it in within 10 mins with an engine crane (o what a god send it is so much easier then using a hoist on the garage roof) after that we tried to fit the alternator...hmm whats this a great bit power steering hose in the way....after an hour of pulling out my hair and arguing with my dad about what to do...he wanted to take the engine out and put the alternator on 1st i suggested making a bracket up and fixing the alternator to the other side....this resulted in a string of words not in the least bit polite but ill just say i didnt suggest making up the bracket again, either way in the end we took the rubber hose bit down to a auto parts place where they attatched a longer piece of copper pipe (the bit that goes into the rack) so the alternator now sits next to the copper pipe and the thick rubber is further up out of the way, after that we connected up the power steering pump and called it a day, the radiator fan is touching one of the front pulleys but i measured it up when the gearbox was on, at the moment a block of wood is holding the engine at an angle so ill test and adjust once the gearbox is connected...as a side note i forgot to put the crap plate, flywheel and clutch on before we put the engine in...oops so ill be on my back tommorow doing that to

just taken some more fots, this is how it looks now and how it should look  im chuffed to bits with the exhaust, i forgot to mention though its only a tempory measure untill i can get some proper down pipes made up i dont trust the flexy pipe but it will do for a few months and to get it through the MOT as long as the welding holds out

EDIT: also taped up the wiring loom over the last week and done various tweeks on the interior, all i have left to do is:

drill a hole in the bulk head for the loom when i get it next week.

find an air filter...KnN do a nice one for the honda civic 2004 type R...round 6.75", ive got 7" clearence for a filter...so basically making the most of it, the KnN one for the 2.9 24v looks a bit to small for my liking.

and thats about it really, if i think of anything else to do ill take fots and update, will also update once its running, im hoping to get a nice sound clip for yall

Hi Alex, nice project.

Just a question, but why are you keeping the mechanical fan?

Just wondering.

It isn't a mechanical fan mate, tis a Kenlowe electrical one, its a good bit of kit, have had it on the 2.8 for about 8 years and hasnt let me down yet.
Alex

just a quick note, starter, alternator, oil filter and all hoses were fitted today, cant remember if i said but i fitted the gearbox and propshaft during the week to its all nicely bolted up, after i had wired everything up i connected the battery and turned the key...engine turned over after a few clicks, this had me puzzled cos at 1st it was making the click of low battery but i tested the battery, anyway my mate held the key in the start position and it must have just been...stiff?...cos after a few secs it whirled over, im hoping once the loom is all plugged in itll start 1st time.

if you're still looking for a good small radiator, you might try one from a saab 900.

capri24v

Alex

EDIT: its alive haha sounds awesome, after everything...the CPS was slightly lose
pushed it in and we had spark, then all i did was change the fuel lines over and it started and omg what a sound, obviously wont sound as loud as it does now....exhausts isnt connected, haha its finally running cant wait to drive it now.

ah power steering is leaking, apart from that though all seems well, ecu is sat in the engine bay at the moment with wires going everywhere...power to the fuel pump relay is via jumper cables at the moment to  but basically just gotta tidy things up haha am walkin around everywhere grinnin now tis great

Tony

Thats another "MOB loom" without any problems

haha of course its ok mate, didnt doubt you for a second, have started the engine up at least 10 times alrdy just to hear the sound of it, plus all my mates have got word of it and want to hear the beast roar  it is wicked, i actually had a dream i was driving it last night hehehe i cant wait till ive sorted all the niggly bits out haha.

EDIT: things to do now

Drill hole and fit ecu in glovebox
Tidy up wires
Fit rear brakes and bleed brakes
Sort out power steering leak
Fit expansion tank
Seal exhaust

o so close to finishing now

RRX

What rear brakes are you using???

ECU is a snug fit in the glove box and if possible i would wire in a hidden kill switch while in bits. They do sound eveil with no exhausts one

sorted mate, everything is done now, brakes are all fitted and bled (using granada rear brakes courtesy of caprisport, although i dont rate them that highly and will be changin to willwoods or something of a similar spec), ECU is in glove box with wiring being all sorted now, already had a kill switch, and have managed to use that one again  screwed up the nut on the power steering and stopped the leak, exhaust is now all done but im dubious about the welding on it so my dad sourced a company to make up new downpipes car will be going there next week, itll be insured and taxed as of next week mot runs out march so got till then to sort out any problems  so far the project is going V well will update with whatever i can from now on.

everything is done now, and the car goes like sh!t off a shovel, its stupidly fast, i would imagine itd pull to over 150mph, not thatd id do that or know cos its illegal :D only thing that holds me back is traction i had it spinning up in 1st 2nd and 3rd tonight. It can be scary when it catches you out on roundabouts. I got custom downpipes made up in the end and there proper meaty and it sounds gorgeous, ill try and get some video footage at some point, only 1 or 2 niggly points to sort out...temp guage wont work properly, not got a clue why, and everythin now and then there is a strange noise coming from the engine, like an air leak or exhaust leak....but it isnt constant o and the starter motor is fooked, i have to bridge the motor with a screwdriver :D i get some dodgey looks when doing it :D but so far im super impressed and would suggest it to anyone. It probably cost me 1k to do it all myself, thats including little bits and bobs like power steering hoses, so well worth the cost and its a lot more economic on the motorway to then the old 2.8i. im just wondering how i can get more power now and how to get more traction :D

Zackspeed280

What gearbox are you using?  It all looks a sweet fit - I take it battery bay cut into rh front of inner wing?

Cheers

tony

the 24v xr4i auto-0 to 60 in 6.71 secs

capri24v

aye i cut into the wing for the battery, theres stilla fair old but of room between the box and the wheel even with a 2" drop, and yeah im using the type 9, a month of thrashin it and its still going, its been hammered for 50k miles before this engine, although i think i have a different type 9 from most its geared for a lot of top speed, 40 in 1st 70 in 2nd 110 in third 140 in 4th and whatever 5th will do lol, its from a 2.8i special so i guess maybe they beefed it up a bit for that engine

capri24v

hey, not updated for ages now, had loads of work on, car is still running a treat and have had zero problems, got starter motor hooked up to push button and temp guage fixed itself  still using the type 9 gearbox its been ragged more than a wordclass pornstar and is still going strong no strange noises as of yet  the engine is outstanding had 150 in 4th still pulling strong as i went into 5th, seems there arnt many cars out there these days with this kinda kit in it, sees impreza off no probs  still more to come later on. Its gonna get prepped for respray after fordfair needs it badly, have had 2 people reverse into it and stone chips are getting excessive. So its time for a bit of patchwork.

Alex

robertsand

Did you have any problems with the brake servo getting in the way of the engine?

Cheers Andy

capri24v

#26
im using a different brake servo, tis off a landrover and bigger then standard...i dont think it goes near the engine at all power steering hoses were my biggest problem...and there still leakin slightly :/...servo is close to my strut brace but thats all

capri24v

just been working on me car since 9 this morning after replacing top mounts having all the strut off etc finally found out what the crunching under braking was, the anti roll bar brackets to body (the ones the roll bar is bolted to) were loose...finger tight :/ so took the car round the block , crunching was lessened but there was still a knocking...hot on the trail of the problem and after much humming and arring dad noticed the cross member was loose   anyway tighened that up...only thing stopping the bolts comin undone was lashings of paint and underseal  and car is lovely and silent now...except a slight rumble from the back end? wheel bearings me thinks but itll last for now

o yeh water pump to oil cooler hose went on me yesterday to luckily there was enough slack in it just to cut the split off and slide it over  driver side caliper was pretty loose to...one bolt was half out :/

capri24v

alright everyone, havnt updated in months now cars been off road for a little while getting it resprayed, although as usual nothing goes quite how you like it just waitin for the painter to give us a call and tell us to bring it in, ive had my dad working on the bodwork in the mean time tho just gettin rid of all the rust and fillering it in, MOB has asked me to stick a few pics up, not all of the filler is rust, had a few cracks in the wide arch fibreglass that have occured with age. also filled in my aerial slot and some indents where ford bages where suppose to go, basically its had a good tidy up before it gets sprayed.

Treated myself over xmas to a few new things, got blue silicone water hoses, inline fan switch and an aluminium expansion tank, unfortunatly the tank hasnt arrived yet so i dont know how well it will fit, bought one for an escort S2 "looks" the same, either way ill make it fit  piccys below

Alex

car went in for the respray today so not gettin it back for a few weeks
