Hi There I want to convert my Ford 2.9 to carb. Would any of the following distributors be suitable for this mod and if so can anybody supply with a suitable wiring diagram. 78TF 12000GA, 83TF 12100 RA,
82TF 121OO AA

Why do you want to change the ignition?

Just keep it and disconnect the wiring for the injectors.
As far as i know the ecu doesn`t control the ignition anyway..
Keep it very sideways..

As I uderstood it the ecu control the advance on the distributor

ECU controls the ignition advance.  Leave the ECU in place, just don't use it for the injection.  Can't think why you'd want to ditch the efi for a carb though.  Will end up mighty thirsty and nowhere near as refined.
Drive it like you mean it!

Yes, you are right.
The ECU does control the timing via the edis module(the saw signal)

Problem is, the distributor from a 2.8 does fit, but you have to swap the pinion on it.
(the 2.9 distributor runs in the opposite direction)

And it will get very bad on fuel consumption..

A friend of mine did build a 2.9 with carb with the intake and ignition from a 2.8. On the dyno it had only 118 hp and slightly less torque. re-jetting did not solved it. Because of the low hp figures, the engine had to work harder to reach and maintain a certain speed, so the fuel consumption went up.

There are a few more of these carb swaps, but none of them run very well. So dont do it, just keep the injection. The wiring is not so difficult to hook up.

No edis on the 12V ( unless the bugeye got it ) , the dizzy has a TFI Module to process the SAW after sending the PIP to the ECU.

For it to work effectivly it still needs the signals from the ECT, IAT, TPS and (maf or map) to generate the correct timing..

So you may as well stick the injectors on and complete the job.

You can get the orginal 2.9 ignition to work with a megajolt programable ignition module or simulair device.

Thank you everybody for your advice. This engine is fitted in a Humber Hawk Hot Rod. I bought as a non running project, the carb mod had already been started and I would like to go down this route to keep it period looking. I realise that the fuel consumption would go up but as the car will not be used that much I will have to live with that. I have looked on the Trigger-Wheels siteand see that they do an EDIS kit, would I be able to use this with my present ECU.

I can see where your coming from.

Yes a carb is not worth the hassle & would probably never match the STD injection system.

However there was a racing series that used the old 2.9 in carb form. Them engines churned out 230bhp.

But that was a pro developed engine package that was not cheap!

But just imagine this in your hot rod!

It don't matter if you use Edis or TFI with out an ECU return signal both will default to a static 10 BTDC.

Unless you use an after market controller.

What about the 2.8 dizzy, if you remove the cog & fit the 2.9 cog it should work I think.
Then all you need is the little module thing.
