hi all, looking for some advice, about a year ago i bought a gearbox out a 90k sierra diesel with the idea of mating it to my boa and putting it in my 2.0 ltr sierra. i now have an 88 2.8 xr4x4 which my engine will possibly go in so the gearbox is kinda surplus to requirements now. i seen one on ebay for 150 quid, seemingly desirable for lightning rods or stock cars, sounds pricey to me, its just so i know what to ask for it, unless someone on here wants to make me a offer ? thinking about punting the boa with its loom (minus ecu) also, whats that worth ?

A t9 diesel gearbox is not a good idea behind a 24v (or any v6) the gear ratio's are very bad for the v6 for street use.

A 2.8 xr4x4 t9 gearbox has much beter ratios.

when i converted my 2.3 ghia to a manual i used one of these boxes and never had any bother, and thats when i was a lad so drove it like a loonie,  i put a 2.8 in it about a month before i sold it to my brother in law and he ran it for a while before converting it to a diesel ironically, and it was ok. i dont know what it would be like with a 2.8i or the 24v mind you. if i use the 24v in my xr i dont need the box. i was gonna try them in my 2.0 lx but the 4x4 came along and it seems a far easier job putting it in it, but its a nice standard car (apart from adj koni's, k+n panel filter and a scorpion exhaust) and kinda dont wanna spoil it, i really  dont ken whether to use the 24v in either car or even my transit  ;D  or sell it and get a tt kit for the xr and just keep the 2ltr in storage as its only done 63k and i am only its third owner. the way the prices are i wont find another one for the price i got it for, any help or advice greatly appreciated as you boys have a better idea of whats best

The diesels had a tall diff fitted either a 3.14 or 3.38.

Then the gearbox ratio's made sense.

Funny enough the 2.3 petrol also had the diesel diffs!

Just wack it on ebay starting at £50 & see what happens.

QuoteThe diesels had a tall diff fitted either a 3.14 or 3.38.

A 2.8 i capri uses a 3.09 diff.

A 3.14 / 3.38 sierra diff is a rare find, most use bigger ratio's.

Type 9 (2.8/2.9 inc 4x4 ) gear ratio's:

1st 3.36
2nd 1.81 (this is the ratio that lets the 2.8 go over 60 in 2nd )
3rd 1.26
4th 1
5th 0.83

Type 9 (diesel)

1st 3.91
2nd 2.29
3rd 1.38
4th 1
5th 0.82

Just thinking about Sierra's here Paul ;D

Because 1st & 2nd are really low geared it has a tall diff.

When in 4th & 5th it makes sense as the revs are then dropped with the taller diff for better MPG.
