Hi folks, I have been in touch with a local company in relation to getting a brace made from 10mm stainless steel with 10mm spacers that fit between the main cap and the brace.
I am basically trying to find out if there is anyone interested on here for a group buy in from the company as they are saying that they would need me to order 10 items from them.

cossiemk2

Depends on the price doesn't it.

I had a mate lasercut one from 10mm steel for mates rates.

Here's a picture of one I've drawn. The pdf-file is a renamed dxf-file.  (The forum settings didn't allow me to post it with a .dxf suffix. )
Dxf's can be imported to most CAM software and saves the company the work of making a CAD drawing first.
Rename the file back to Girdle3.dxf to restore the file.

cossiemk2

That's what mine looks like.

I think i have a SolidWorks drawing of it somewhere too.

Out of curiosity what would mates rates be, they are quoting me around £70 for them if I can get 10 people to buy otherwise they want £100 for one.

The one that I have designed is similar to yours but has an extension on the shorter of the 2 long sides for a brace for the oil pump if anyone wanted to do this.

I got 3 waterjet cut for NOK1200 (~£130) . 10mm high grade carbon steel.

NOK1200 for all 3, NOK400 each.

Mates rate was free, as I help him out with his racecar.

I think he asks around 50 quid for them, but I have to check with him.

Interested mate but that does seem a little on the pricey side

What sort of price are people wanting to pay as if I have interest I could probably try to negotiate with the company for a lower price

70 is acceptable if its good steel, precision cut but we shouldn't need to buy 10 - ask him if he'll do that deal on 3 for cash. If he says yeah, I'm in.

dont forget these little room in the 2wd sump for a girdle

managed to make one up for my 24v, but thats only just inside the standard sump with some of the webs on the inside of the sump ground down

thats why I reckon spacers and longer bolts is probably the best way - Daves special bolt method stands the brace a fair bit lower. I suspect you can get away with thinner spacers than 10mm actualy. if theres still an issue, theres a bit of clearance between the sump and the crossmember so I can always mod the sump bottom at the high end - its good old easy to weld steel. I can't se any of that being needed though, I'm sure theres 2cm of room, surely?

I spent a good few hours measuring, remeasuring, checking, rechecking and then checking some more for mine.
The final version of it will have 10mm spacers between the main caps and the brace and some good old 12.9 bolts for it to fit and hopefully stay together for whatever I throw at it.

O.K. folks, I have bit the bullet and got one of the braces made up for my engine as I needed one any way.
After plenty of measuring I hope it fits.

Janspeedcapri

you sure about that? looks wrong...

ShaunPC

I was sure that after all of the measurments made that it would fit but unfortunately it doesn't.
Back to the drawing board

Agreed, it looks wrong.

The webs should stick out the same on both sides.

I'm sure it will fit the engine but the conrods are going to hit it.

Here's mine.

Oh dear unlucky.

Hard to tell from a picture but maybe the bolt holes where not drilled right or something.

On the bright side imagine if you had done a batch of 10!

Shaun - If hes offering, why don't you just use Cortiworths cad/cam data???? I'm about to ring around locally for prices based on using that - it may be cheaper if it all automated? will let you know what they charge.

I have not tried the brace on an engine, yet, but I can do so tomorrow. I have no reason to believe it won't fit, tho.

The file is free to anyone who want to use it.

;D Well I am happy to say that after quite a bit of fetling I have now got my brace to fit so as you can imagine I feel much better.
I am gratefull for everyones sugestions but all it took was some latteral thinking on my part and several discs on the angle grinder, I am using 12.9 bolts to hold it all together when I do give it a spanking which believe me I will definitely be in need of some aggression release after all the pain (both physical and mental) of building the car.
I can't wait to get it all together and get the car out for a play.  ;D

The main issue that I had was infact nothing to do with the conrods but believe it or not it was to tight on the oil pump side of the engine so I had to take 12mm off that side and also had to gring rebates in the side to clear the reinforcing ribs of the sump.
I will get some pictures up of what it looks like now on tuesday when it all gets bolted up with the new main bearings and big end shells and uprated big end bolts. Cheers again folks but I am a awkward sod where my projects are concerned and if it doesn't go right the first time I have to try and correct my mistakes.
