Hi all when a engine spins a shell does this cause major damage .i seen one for sale and dont know if this would be a good buy.owner said it had been rebuilt but not run

if a engine does spin a bearing shell, it can ruin the surface off the crank, rods or the block it self. mostly caused by oil starvation or not the right clearance off the bearings.

at least you need to take the engine apart and check the damage. if there is no damage to the block (crank surface), your in luck. than there is stil the crank and rods that need to be carefull be examend for damage, clearance and roundness.

thanks so buying this engine could be very costly if it was not fixed properly.think there would be to much damage after this sort of failure what do you think would you touch this engine.....?

I ended up breaking a boa due to bearings. It had spun one big end but the damage to the crank required a regrind and new shells. Almost as much as finding another engine.

without knowing what and how big the damage was and what is done to that engine to repair it, it can be a gamble.

it is a gamble but then again so is most things when dealing with engines and cars an all that but friend of mine had a nissan 180 sr20det it ran a bearing on no1 scored the block and the crank he managed to save the con rod and crank but had to get them machined and all new bearings but the block was for the scrap but it was fixed and is goin perfect ever since1 thing i alws say is if ya biuild your own then ya kno wat you have is good..

A gamble is exactly right.

The Minker had a 5 year history of spinning bearings before I got it.

Replaced the crank, 1 rod, new shells & it's never done it again  

Crank journal was marked & rod big end was not exactly round.

Traced back to when a garage worked on the car & damaged the crank
