Not posted for some time now, but starting to build a new track car and thought that I would post some photos as it progresses. But first we must say a sad farewell to my old XR24x4SC, which had it's last outing at "Motorsport at the Palace" at the end of May at Crystal Palace. I made a very embarrassing school boy error and forgot to shut the throttle over the finish line, which resulted in me hitting a tree, flipping the car into the air and landing on it's roof. Not surprisingly the body shell was a write off, with every panel bent, A & B posts crumpled and the transmission tunnel kinked in several places. Luckily all the mechanicals (apart from the radiator) have survived and I have a spare shell, so the plan is to have the new car ready for the start of next season.

This gives me the opportunity to make many improvements that I have been planning for a while, so hopefully the car will be lighter and more powerful than before. Hopefully the costs will be minimal, with the main expense being time (he says hopefully). I have the new shell on the ramp stripped out completely now and started cutting it about to prepare it for competition. I will post some photos of the new shell soon but first here are some shots of the last moments of the lod car. I've been competing with it for nearly ten years now, so it was bound to happen eventually.

Ouch!  Sorry to hear of this but glad you are OK and have decided to build another one and with improvements too.  Like a phoenix, she will rise from the ashes.

A few pics of the new shell. It is a 2.9 4x4 but has servo brakes instead of ABS, so I think it is not an XR shell. I have stripped the interior out and started cutting out bits I won't be needing such at the sunroof and the rear wheel well. Has anyone had experience of the servo brakes? I am tempted to keep them, but have no idea if they will give as much power as the ABS unit. I don't need the ABS so am thinking that the servo brakes will save some weight and need a lot less pipework as it doesn't need the valve block.

Cool, glad to see this being put back on the raod again

It may well be a XR shell, on the pre 90 XR4x4 ABS was only a option. So it could either be a very late 88 or 89 XR shell if fitted with a 2.9 or it could be a GLS 4x4 shell. I think the only way from there would be to decode the VIN number, that is if you're really fussed about finding out.

I run a 1.8 cvh servo and master cylinder on my track car. Brakes are 4x4 cosworth front and rear. They work great with a good pedal feel.

Good to hear your okay, and glad your gonna reshell the beast.

If you want a bit more room the pumped master cylinder unit can be used without ABS or Servo, and if space is tight the pump bit can be remotely mounted.  It is very powerful and simple to wire up / plumb in

I'm using one on my 24V 4x4 Puma.

Cheers Dave
It's nice to be important but
It's more important to be nice

My XR4x4 is servo. Had one a few years back too.

Thats good advice, sounds like I have two options, either keep the servo unit or use the electronic pump unit without the ABS system. The servo option saves wiring but takes up a little more space in the engine bay, but I'm not short of space in that area. Thanks
