I'm interested in a 1970 mk1 escort. it is a 1300 model but minus engine. If i put a 2.0 zetec in it, will it still be exempt from road tax? Also, what happens at the mot with emissions testing? Is there anything to worry about in doing this?

The legality and eligability of a vehicle to keep its historic status and for most, its age related licence plate is based on a points system.

Its scored on a total of 14 points. To retain your plate and therefore free tax you need to score at least 8 points.

The body, 5 points

engine , 1 point

transmission, 2 points

suspension, 2 points

axles, 2 points

steering asembly, 2 points.


You'll be fine with the engine swap.

Will be interesting if retro testing is enforced, will piss off alot of hot rodders who'll end up with Q plates.
