How many reasonable Sierras etc are just going to be scrapped because of this stupid idea?

I wont be buying a new car............sierra`s are getting abit scarce anyway. Cant see people many people going out and getting a new car on the tick for £2.5k cash in on there old one.

All my vehicles are old `82,`86,`87, 2x`94. Cheap to repair,cheap to run and more importantly cheap to tax

Couple of questions...

What age is a car tax free...?
What age is a car in the old taxation categories...?

Why does road tax depend on emmissions...?  
If anything surely it should be based on the vehicles maximun laden weight...?
Are the goverment secretly building a balloon structure around the world and thats what the money is spent on, as judging by the state the roads are getting to it sure as hell aint spent repairing them...  

Oh and just to say something on the subject...
£2500 if that figure is what gets decided is substatially more than most 9+ vehicles are worth...
How about claim '£2500' for a rotten one then buy a nice one for £2000 jobs a good 'n'...

i think you would only get the pay out as a trade in for new.

with the cheapest new car being 5k that leaves a 2.5k finance gap.

less well off people will do it, end up with finance they cant pay and lose their car.

Free car tax is anything older than 1972 IIRC and I think the old taxation goes upto March 1st 2001. Anything built after the tax is done on emissions bands.

If there doing it to get older cars 9+ off the road then should be allowed to purchase a car younger than 9, not only from dealer...

they want to stimulate new car sales, not old car sales.

And it would be so difficult to police and operate..

Imagine you trade in your 11yr old and they give you a voucher for 2.5k. you buy your m8's 8.5 yr old rover worth about 250 for 2.5k. 6 months later you trade in your 9 year old rover and get 2.5k... your mate is now willing to sell you his 8.5 yr old mazda worth 250 for 2.5k... yor mate now has 4.5k in his back pocket and in 6 months time you can do it again. if that were to happen then the price of affordable old motors would go up and out of the reach of the less well off.

It will be new cars only for sure.


And they can't force it as some 9+ yr old cars will be worth far more than the trade value.

as i said, they take finance the cant afford.

Default = they loose care
Default =finance company has shit car the can't shift

Result...

More shafted consumers, crap loads of cheap shit cars that don't sell.

I understand that, what i mean is how was that ruling ever passed...?
As far as i was aware 'Road tax' (as created) is to repair the damage/wear caused to roads thats why it used to be based (loosely) on a vehicles weight... Car x ammount, 7.5t x ammount and so on...?
Another question, is disabled road tax free...?

In Norway we have an arrangement with our old cars. When we deliver our old car at the breakers we get 1500kr (£150) in return from the government. It has been like this sins the 70Ã,,Ã,,žÃ,.

Back in 1996 we did something similar, not because of any financial problems but because the average age of a Norwegian car had risen to 12.5 yrs.
The government raised the money return from £150 to £650 for every car that were delivered to the breakers. (We didnÃ,,Ã,,žÃ,t have to buy a new car)
What then happened was that a lot of people scrapped their good and usable car, normally worth maybe £1000-£1500 for the return of £650?? (A lot of good old Fords did die that year)
And of course a lot of bad cars were scrapped too.

BUT the people who used their old, unsafe and bad condition car every day, worth maybe £200 did not scrap their car, because they couldnÃ,,Ã,,žÃ,t afford a newer better car. And thatÃ,,Ã,,žÃ,s because a lot of the better cars we scrapped too, and the prices on the remaining where to high and risingÃ,,æ  

This lasted one year and then we were back at the £150.

in germany and belgium, there is happening the same thing.

the goverment is rewarding the scrapping off older cars, if the people buy a new one. and presto, car sales went up.

the dutch goverment looked at it and said no against this and the reason was that it only helps the new car sales for a little while, but the cost were to high to buy and scrap all the old cars.

this problem is already happening in germany, the goverment there already spent a fortune to buy these old cars and also pays for the scrapping cost. the goverment could make some money by just sell good parts, but no, a scrapper told me they are getting those cars, but are not allowed to sell a single part off it.  these cars are getting stripped from the oil, plastics ect. and than go into the press.
