It's a piece of p*ss to remove the tank - best to be safe than sorry.

It's not the fuel in the tank you need to worry about - for it to go bang you have to have a nice amount of vapour in an air gap above the fuel. For a nice big bang the air / fuel mix needs to be near on "stoichometric" i.e. around 14.7:1.

Safest state for a fuel tank is either 100% empty or 100% full.

I'd remove it for the 10 minutes it takes.

I've done a few tanks in my time including a Reliant Robin    for a bloke at the hospital mortuary. Always soak the bolts in plus gas or WD40 for a good half hour before attempting to undo them. Only had to cut one tank strap which was on my 4be donor car which looked like it had been sill-deep in flood water in Yorkshire where I got it from and all the bolt heads had been rounded off which I removed with some Craftsman stud removers I bought from JC Penney's department store in Dearborn, USA.
