Been sitting since 2008 after Mot failure for rust on the rear chassis, just getting round to look at it :P

Double Chassis- Nice

Its not so bad. I have seen worse. ;)

Doing a bit of Electrolysis,

I have done my capri and 20M tank that way and i would certainly would do a air leak test after cleaning the tank.

The biggest problem with the rust inside the tank is that the zink coating inside is also gone or damaged. When you fill it up again with E10 fuel it wil start to rust again. A new fuel tank is still available. Here is one :https://www.carpartsexpress.co.uk/ford-granada-scorpio-89---94-2.0-2.9-efi-new-petrol-fuel-tank~1013 for £180.00.

It may seem a bit pricy but as i have found out a new tank was the way to go if i consider the time and materials to clean the tank, just to find out it started to rust again and that rust ended up into the fuel system witch caused new problems witch cost me more time and money to solve. I tried tank cure coating to seal the inside of the tank but the E fuels get aggressive over time eating the sealant away when the car is stored.

dave73

Yes I was going to seal the inside with that coating POR 15, so you reckon that will break down after a while.

Ok Paul, I'm going with your advice, I've bought the tank, it was £100 for the POR15, so £80 extra is a no brainer.

Thank you Paul, I'm lso putting the rear axle and some new wings which have surface rusted over the last 15 years in the pool now, so not wasted.

I have stripped the axle down to de-rust and paint it up, so I'm changing the axle oil, noticed a bit of play, how much play in the diff Is allowed?.

Also, is this a Limited Slip, didn't the cosworth come with a limited slip? If I turn one side the other goes in the same direction.

What adjustment to the backlash can I do, any instructions for it!

Can we upload VIDEOS?

The >94 Cosworth V6 with traction control never had a limit slip diff. The diff in the picture is a standaard open diff. The MK1 24v had LSD.

https://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/rearaxle/RAxleSpecs.pdf

The following cars were fitted with LSD's but it also always important to double check.

• All 4x4 Sierra's and Granada's (2.8/9 and 2.0DOHC and Cosworth)
• Most but not all 24v Cosworth Granada/Scorpio (up to approx 1994 are LSD, after that they
are 'open' type because the Scorpio 24v had traction control instead)
• All RWD Cosworth Sierra (3dr, Sapphire, RS500)

The 1994 Scorpio i stripped had a viscous LSD in it, which looked very similar to that above with the rear cover removed

dave73

Thank you for the link to the manual, there's a lot of tools needed, either of you had a go at this. Can you still get shims?

My axle cover tag is unrecognisable, so I don't know what the numbers are, but it looks like it is a LSD.

Dave

capri v8 driver

It could be that you have a 7 inch viscous LSD. Difficult to see on that picture.

To check the ford LSD off the car:
jam the input flange and try and turn one of the output flanges - if it turns fairly easily (there will be a small resistance and the other output flange will turn the opposite direction) then its either an open diff or its a dead LSD
but if its really stiff/hard to turn then it'll be a working LSD.

There is some play between the gears. If the diff is quit when driving just change the oil.
greetz Paul.

Numbers are on crown wheel

capri v8 driver

That a standaard Granada/Scorpio 2.9 cosworth 7.5 inch 3.64 LSD diff used till '92.

You will be able to find seals and bearings for it but not cheap. The viscous LSD parts will be difficult to find.

I would check the workings of the LSD, replace the gasket, fill it with oil and run it. If there isn't noise you will be fine.

Thank you for confirmation Paul, will go with your recommendation, odd thing, there was no gasket when I took cover off and it wasn't leaking.

You mentioned

"That a standard Granada/Scorpio 2.9 cosworth 7.5 inch 3.64 LSD diff used till '92"

What did they use after 92, because the Scorpio Ultima wasn't until 94-98,

The left overs from the '92 model. The '93 model only sold in low numbers (less then 15.000 in total) Because of the arrival of the new model. But even the new model did not sell well and only (average) 25.000 scorpio's where made each year.

Ford only produced 30.000 BOA engines in the entire lifespan. Only 90% of the boa got used for the scorpio, the remaining 10% of the new produced engines is used as a test or spare engine or is sold as a engine only for racing ect. Relate this to the numbers of LSD diff's and you will see there aren't many out there anymore.

Petrol Tank arrived,

Not been treated inside, wondering whether I should still treat it?

capri v8 driver

Nope i would not use a coating. When E fuel goes bad it can get very aggressive and eat the zink inside the tank and starts to rust. Even a coating will dissolve over time.

I made a drain in my 20M and Capri tank in case of a longer storage time i can drain the tank. After that i can fill the tank with synthetic fuel. This fuel stays good for 3 years.
greetz Paul.

Capri V8 Driver.

dave73

Ok, I suppose if your not using the car that much and the tank does go or one is not available, you could always make one out of stainless steel.

Or a plastic fuel tank.  ;) Point is that the E marked fuels, when it goes bad and it stays in the fuel tank and fuel system, it make a big mess of the fuel tank and the rest of the fuel system. Plenty of cars that come out of storage each year that have bad fuel, corrodes the tank, leaking fuel lines and filters and in the worse case burn down because of this. You see this every spring. Since you are doing a car that stood still for 10 years this is a something i should mention.
greetz Paul.

Capri V8 Driver.

dave73

That's both E10 & E5, I thought E5 was safe.

Dave

capri v8 driver

Quote from: dave73 on July 08, 2025, 10:57:02 That's both E10 & E5, I thought E5 was safe.

Dave

Nope. E5 has the same problems. There are more organic components in it, the ethanol, and bacteria grow in that. This not only makes the gasoline go bad faster, it also makes the gasoline acidic, causing tanks and fuel system parts to corrode and dissolve faster.

There are however by law E5 marked fuels that don't contain ethanol. Shell, Ok, Tamoil and Tinq in the Netherlands claim they don't use ethanol in there 98 ron fuels. For now that is. I don't know if its the same in the UK.

Even ethanol-free gasoline can degrade and go bad over time, though it generally has a longer shelf life (up to 1 year in optimal conditions) than gasoline with ethanol (6 weeks to 3 months). While ethanol-free gasoline is less prone to issues like water absorption, it can still oxidize but in a lesser degree as E fuels.

Is it a special oil for the Granada LSD, can't seem to find a definitive spec.

Dave

capri v8 driver

The Ford workshop manual call for SAE-90 hypoid oil [old Ford spec: SQM2C-9002-AA]. 1.3 liters. its a 80W-90 oil.

For the LSD Ford used this oil with the LSD additive which is rare/no longer available. Replacement for the friction modifier is Motorcraft XL-3.

You could try Castrol Hypoy 90 Limited Slip oil. Some have good result with this oil.

Don't use a regular gear oil in a LSD diff. It will kill the LSD plates in a very short time.

Thank you Paul,

I found this;

Rang Comma, they said their oil
COMMA - EP80W90GL5 should be compatible

Comma also do this,  Limited Slip Differential Gear Oil -  LS80W901L

Uses Ford Spec additive M2C119-A, need to check that's compatible with the original additive Motorcraft XL-3.

XL-3 (U.S.& Mexico)is Ford EST-M2C118-A

Dave

capri v8 driver

We had Comma oils and other products in the past. Today its hardly sold in the Netherlands.

Ford M2C119-A is not a additive but a oil specification.

Motorcraft XL-3 is still available and i use it in every Ford LSD. It was the only friction modifier that actually reduces chatter and gear noise in my LSD 8.8 inch rear axle of my Capri V8. With 30 euros a bottle it isn't cheap but replacing a set of LSD clutch plates will cost a lot more. Since clutch plates for you diff are hard to find and expensive i would use XL-3 just to be safe.

Check ebay or amazone. Even the local Ford dealer should be able to order it as Motorcraft XL-3 additive is still being used in the mustang and trucks that have a LSD.
greetz Paul.

Capri V8 Driver.

dave73

So the COMMA - EP80W90GL5,

Is that OK, and then add the Motorcraft XL-3 to it.

Sierra/granada/scorpio lsd units are sealed though, gear oil does not touch lsd discs

capri v8 driver

Your correct. My bad. I had the wrong diff in mind. The Ford workshop manual call for SAE-90 hypoid oil [old Ford spec: SQM2C-9002-AA]. 1.3 liters. its a 80W-90 oil.

Sierra/granada/scorpio lsd units are Viscous LSD and the use a silicon fluid/grease with a friction modifier. I don't know witch silicone fluid / grease is used.

greetz Paul.

Capri V8 Driver.

dave73

That's good to know

So will these do it.

capri v8 driver

You only need the oil.

Since you have a Viscous LSD there is no need to buy the friction modifier.
